In memory of Jan Palach

These days we commemorate the anniversary of the burning of Jan Palach, who studied from 1966 to 1968 at the University of Economics in Prague and lived in a dormitory in Jarov.

Jan Palach, is a symbol of resistance against the passive resistance of society to the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact troops in August 1968. He had a hard time bearing the Soviet Union’s policy towards reform efforts in the then Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. To arouse society against the Soviet occupation, on January 16, 1969, he spilled gasoline and burned himself on Wenceslas Square. He died of his injuries three days later.
